Cannon Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in Curry County, New Mexico Amarillo Texas (104 miles form cannon), Lubbock Texas (115 miles), Albuquerque NM (230 miles) are some surrounding cities. The base serves United States Air Force It is presently the home of the 27th Fighter Wing. It is about 13.8 square KM/5.3 square miles. It has a work force of more than 4,000 active-duty members and civilians The primary mission of the 27th Fighter Wing is to maintain an General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter wing capable of day and night combat operations for war fighting commanders, world-wide, at any time. The 27th Fighter Wing is part of Air Combat Command (ACC), Twelfth Air Force. The base started working in late 1920s as a civilian passenger utility. The USAF started using it in March 1943. It is names in honor of General John K. Cannon, a former commander of Tactical Air Command. The base has 683 family housing units within its boundaries and another 611 units across U.S. Highway 60/84, the major east-west highway adjacent to the base. In addition, Cannon has 350 units of government leased housing in Clovis and Portales. White Sands National Monument (227 miles form cannon), Amarillo Texas (104 miles form cannon), Lubbock Texas, Carlsbed Caverns National Park are some of the attractions near the base. There are no educational establishments for children. The schools in Clovis & Portales can be utilized for the same. There is child care centers present in the base. The base is responsible for flying combat missions world-wide The base hosts F-16 Falcon fighter planes.

The racial makeup of the residents is 67.97% White, 13.34% African American, 0.70% Native American, 5.71% Asian, 0.31% Pacific Islander, 6.06% from other races, and 5.91% from two or more races. 12.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. In December 2002, the 524 FS deployed to Kuwait and participated in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, dropping nearly a million pounds of precision guided munitions, more than any other F-16 Block 40 squadron in history. The base had been associated with the combat missions of the USAF. Col. Scott D. West is the current commander of the base. The base uses the logo of Air Combat Command.
